Explore the mangrove lagoons of Kalba on the east
coast of the UAE in open top Canadian canoes among the
abundant wildlife, in the company of an experienced
guide. This area is of great environmental importance
and is to become the first protected national park of
the UAE. The salt water lagoon, which comes in from
the sea, winds it's way through the mangrove trees taking
you past a wide variety of bird and marine life.
The mangrove swamps here are among the most northerly
mangroves in the world. One rare type of bird, the white
collared kingfisher, is found nowhere else in the world
and although there are only 50 pairs left, can be regularly
seen among the branches hanging over the creek. Crabs
on the shore, fish flashing past the canoes, the occasional
turtle drifting through the water, herons and storks
along the mud banks, standing dead still, waiting for
unsuspecting fish to swim past them, makes this activity
a totally unique experience.
